The Drop: New Gadgets and Innovations
Let’s dive into the latest drops that have everyone buzzing.
The Steam Deck OLED
Valve has done it again! The Steam Deck OLED is here, and it’s a game-changer. This upgraded version of the already impressive console features enhancements across the board—better screen, improved fan, longer battery life, and a more powerful processor. It’s hard not to get excited about this one; I’m definitely adding it to my shopping list.
The Humane AI Pin
In the quest to answer the age-old question of “what comes after smartphones?” Humane has introduced its first AI-powered device, the Humane AI Pin. While it may not scream “next big thing” at first glance, I can’t remember the last time I was this eager to try a new gadget. Is this the future? Only time will tell!
Custom ChatGPTs
OpenAI has made it possible for you to create your own version of ChatGPT tailored to your specific needs. You can customize its knowledge, character, and style in just five minutes. I’m genuinely excited about these smaller, specialized AI tools, as they seem to hold more promise than the idea of a single, all-powerful AI.
Planet Earth III
The first episode of the highly anticipated Planet Earth III has premiered in the US, and it’s nothing short of breathtaking. The stunning drone footage, immersive natural sounds, and groundbreaking underwater and aerial filming techniques make this series a must-watch. Keep an eye out for some exciting Planet Earth content coming to The Vergecast soon!
Aftermath
A new publication has emerged from some talented video game reporters, and they’re off to a strong start covering everything from Zelda to the Steam Deck and Overwatch. If you’re a fan of gaming journalism, this is a site you’ll want to bookmark.
Final Cut Pro Updates
Apple has reminded Final Cut users that they haven’t been forgotten. The iPad app received a significant update, introducing handy keyboard shortcuts, workflow enhancements, and a useful voiceover tool. It’s great to see Apple continuing to support its creative software.
The Marvels
Marvel’s latest film, The Marvels, has sparked some divisive opinions, but The Verge’s Charles Pulliam-Moore found it to be a rewarding experience for superfans while remaining accessible to newcomers. I’m looking forward to checking this one out!
Documents by Readdle
The Files app on iOS has long been criticized for its confusing organization and cumbersome file management. Readdle’s Documents app has always been a superior alternative, and its recent update introduces a new inbox feature that consolidates all your files in one place. It’s messy but perfect for those who want simplicity.
Elon, Inc.
Bloomberg has launched a weekly podcast that delves into the chaotic world of Elon Musk. It’s a chatty yet thoughtful exploration of the life of the world’s richest person, and even the first episode covers a lot of ground.
Group Project: Money Management Tools
Last week, I asked you to share your favorite systems for managing money, especially after the news that Mint is shutting down. Many of you reached out with fantastic recommendations, and I appreciate all the insights!
YNAB: You Need A Budget
The clear favorite among you was YNAB (You Need A Budget). Users love its ability to sync accounts and cards, its ad-free experience, and its structured budgeting principles. It’s a solid choice for anyone looking to take control of their finances.
Copilot
Another popular recommendation was Copilot, which is known for its sleek design and excellent data visualization tools. While it’s currently only available for iOS and Mac, users rave about how enjoyable it is to use.
Other Noteworthy Apps
Many of you suggested other apps worth exploring, including Qapital, Buddy, Empower, HomeBank, Expenses, Quicken, EveryDollar, Nudget, Ledger, and Dime.
The Spreadsheet Approach
Some of you have found success with good old-fashioned spreadsheets in Excel or Google Sheets. For those who prefer a straightforward overview of their finances, this method can be incredibly effective.
Templates and Custom Systems
A few readers recommended Tiller for creating cleaner, more automated spreadsheets, while others shared that they’ve built custom systems that require a bit more effort but offer complete control over their finances.
Bank Budgeting Tools
Many banks now offer budgeting tools integrated into their apps, making it easier to manage finances alongside your banking activities. SoFi’s features received positive mentions in this regard.
After considering all your feedback, I’m excited to give Copilot a try while also crafting an epic 2024 budget spreadsheet.
Screen Share: Kevin Nguyen’s Writing Apps
This week, I reached out to Kevin Nguyen, a deputy editor at The Verge, to share his writing app setup. He initially mentioned four apps but later corrected himself to five—clearly, he’s serious about his writing tools!
Kevin’s Writing Apps
Kevin uses a rotation of five writing apps: iA Writer, Google Docs, Bear, Apple Notes, and Scrivener. Each app serves a specific purpose in his writing process, from quick drafting to detailed note-taking.
Non-Writing Apps
In addition to his writing tools, Kevin’s homescreen includes essential apps like Wallet, Google Authenticator, Photos, Camera, Google Maps, and more. He also enjoys using Letterboxd to track films and Pins for saving longform stories.

Signing Off
This weekend, let’s take a moment to reflect on Tumblr, a social network that has been a unique space for creativity and expression. While it’s not facing an imminent demise, its future remains uncertain. The recent discussions surrounding its potential collaboration with ActivityPub have sparked interest, and it’s a reminder of the challenges in building a better social network. As we navigate this landscape, I find myself rooting for alternatives like Mastodon even more.
Feel free to share your thoughts, recommendations, and what you’re currently enjoying. Until next time!
