The Transformative Impact of AI on Global Innovation: Insights from the International Innovation Barometer 2025

The sixth annual International Innovation Barometer, published by innovation consultancy Ayming, reveals a groundbreaking shift in the landscape of innovation driven by artificial intelligence (AI). As businesses around the globe increasingly embrace AI technologies, the report highlights that the impact is not just theoretical; tangible benefits are already being realized in innovation processes and outputs.

AI’s Positive Influence on Innovation

According to the report, a staggering 84 percent of businesses believe that AI is positively influencing their innovation efforts. This sentiment underscores a significant transformation in how companies approach research and development (R&D). While discussions about AI often center around its future potential, this research indicates that organizations are already extracting substantial value from AI in their innovation strategies.

Restructuring R&D Teams for AI Integration

One of the most notable findings is that 41 percent of businesses have restructured their R&D teams to better integrate AI into their innovation processes. This trend is even more pronounced among larger companies, where 52 percent report similar changes. This restructuring reflects a growing recognition that AI is not merely a tool but a fundamental component of modern innovation strategies.

Shifting Priorities: AI Takes Center Stage

The report also highlights a shift in business priorities, with the implementation of AI ranking as the second highest innovation priority for 29 percent of respondents. This is just behind the broader adoption of technology, which 32 percent of businesses identified as their top concern. The intertwining of technology and innovation has reached a point where the two concepts are often used interchangeably, largely due to the accessibility of advanced AI models.

Budget Allocation for AI in Innovation

As businesses increasingly recognize the importance of AI, their innovation budgets reflect this shift. Notably, 47 percent of businesses are allocating between 6 and 20 percent of their innovation budget to R&D in AI, while nearly a quarter (22 percent) are dedicating more than 20 percent. This financial commitment signals a strong belief in AI’s potential to drive innovation.

Democratization of AI Access

Njy Rios, Director of R&D Incentives at Ayming UK, notes that while AI development has been dominated by tech giants like Microsoft and Google, the emergence of accessible models such as ChatGPT has democratized AI access. This shift has lowered the barriers to entry, allowing businesses of all sizes to integrate AI into their operations without the need for extensive resources to develop proprietary systems.

AI as a Catalyst for Creativity and Collaboration

Interestingly, the research indicates that businesses are beginning to view AI as a catalyst for collaboration and creativity rather than merely an automation tool. 53 percent of respondents are using AI to analyze data to support innovation, 43 percent to predict new trends, and 39 percent to generate new ideas. In contrast, only 26 percent are utilizing AI for automation. This shift in perception highlights a growing understanding of AI’s potential to enhance human creativity rather than replace it.

The Future of AI in Innovation

Rios emphasizes that the future of AI will likely be characterized by hybrid models that optimize human creativity with AI’s analytical capabilities. He points out that generative AI, as it currently stands, lacks the ability to produce original thoughts independently, underscoring the necessity of human input in the innovation process.

The report suggests that AI has already altered the innovation landscape, and we can expect to see a significant reduction in the timescale of the innovation lifecycle—from ideation to output. This acceleration means that businesses can innovate faster and make their investments go further.

A Global Perspective

In June 2024, Ayming surveyed 1,227 R&D and innovation leaders, including Chief Financial Officers, Chief Executive Officers, and Chief Technology Officers, across 17 countries. The diverse representation from sectors such as automotive, construction, finance, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and technology provides a comprehensive view of the global innovation landscape.

Conclusion

The findings from the International Innovation Barometer 2025 paint a compelling picture of how AI is reshaping innovation. As businesses continue to adapt and integrate AI into their strategies, the potential for enhanced creativity, collaboration, and efficiency is immense. In a world where innovation is paramount, the integration of AI stands as a testament to the evolving nature of business and technology, heralding a new era of creativity and efficiency.
